    The Client

    The “Company” is a publication about the people and institutions that shape New York, delivering fast, original, essential analysis and reporting on city and state politics and the media industry.

    The Situation

    After raising a seed round of nearly $2M, the “Company” had spent 80% of the capital yet were unaware if they were on a path to achieve breakeven cash flow, raise future fundraising, or have a path to exit through acquisition. The revenue was 100% ad-driven through a small sales department, and they were unsure if they should focus on investing the remainder of their capital on increasing the ad sales team.

    The Result

    After being brought on mutually by the Board of Directors and Founders, we conducted a deep dive into the business to understand their options. We conducted a scenario planning analysis around the following options:


    1. Optimized Ad Sales with a larger team

    2. Consumer subscriptions

    3. Commercial subscriptions


    The results, which showed their current model was most likely to never achieve positive cash flow and that consumer subscriptions had a far less attractive risk/reward ratio, surprised the founders but led to a full pivot of the business. Within 6 months, a major publisher in the space acquired the “Company”
